Abstract
The structural changes of the Fe-10;20;30;40;47 wt% Cr binary alloys have been investigated by means of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Depending on the composition all the alloys quenched from 1200 and 1450°C (except Fe-10Cr) have either a tweed structure or a structure containing σ-phase grains surrounded by tweed. The σ-phase represents alternating layers of Cr or Fe atoms, but not a chemical compound. At ageing below 650°C both tweed and σ-phase structures are dissolved. α (Fe-rich) and α′ (Cr-rich) phases are formed. The Fe-Cr diagram is represented.
